This exhibition explores the Australian landscape and a sense of place through the complex genius of Arthur Boyd.
A figurative expressionist painter, ceramicist and printmaker, Arthur Boyd (1920–1999) is considered one of Australia’s most significant modern artists. Landscape of the Soul spans the artist’s life and considers landscape in his work from youthful plein air subjects celebrating light, to the final phase of Boyd's career depicting the Shoalhaven on the south coast of New South Wales.
From light-filled early landscapes to tormented figures in the bush, more than 60 paintings, prints and drawings in this exhibition expose an inner landscape and an artist’s creative odyssey. This exhibition is primarily drawn from the Bundanon Trust Collection with selected works from the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and other state collections.
Arthur Boyd: Landscape of the Soul was curated by Barry Pearce, internationally renowned expert in Australian art and Emeritus Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery NSW. A full-colour publication featuring a curatorial essay by Barry Pearce and an introduction by Bundanon CEO Deborah Ely accompanies the show – available from the Gallery Shop.
A Bundanon Trust Touring Exhibition supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
